Spartan Way
THE SPARTAN WAY IS ABOUT COMMUNITY.
A COMMUNITY THAT TAKES CARE OF OURSELVES, EACH OTHER, AND THIS PLACE - RESPECTFULLY, RESPONSIBLY, AND SAFELY.
WE BELIEVE RELATIONSHIPS ARE KEY TO BUILDING A POSITIVE COMMUNITY. RELATIONSHIPS INCLUDE STUDENT TO STUDENT; STUDENT TO STAFF; STAFF TO STUDENT; STAFF TO STAFF; AND STAFF TO PARENT. EVERYBODY HAS A VOICE TO BE HEARD.
WE BELIEVE IN SETTING HIGH EXPECTATIONS AND OFFERING HIGH LEVELS OF SUPPORT WITHIN OUR RELATIONSHIPS TO CREATE A POSITIVE COMMUNITY.
WE BELIEVE BEHAVIOR IS COMMUNICATION AND JUST AS WE TEACH/LEARN ACADEMIC SUBJECTS, WE ALSO NEED TO TEACH/LEARN BEHAVIORS AND SKILLS, ALL IN AN ATMOSPHERE, THAT IS RESTORATIVE IN NATURE AND TRAUMA-SENSITIVE.
WE ARE ALL HUMAN AND WE WILL ALL MESS UP; HOWEVER, MISBEHAVIOR IS VIEWED AS, A HARM AGAINST PEOPLE, RELATIONSHIPS & THE COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE. MISBEHAVIOR CAN BECOME A TEACHABLE MOMENT AND THE HARM THAT IS CAUSED CAN BE RESTORED BY MEMBERS TAKING RESPONSIBILITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY TO MAKE THINGS AS RIGHT AS POSSIBLE THROUGH DETERMINING UNMET NEEDS, CONSEQUENCES AND SOLUTIONS.

HIGH EXPECTATIONS & HIGH SUPPORT
"The fundamental unifying hypothesis of restorative practices is that “human beings are happier, more cooperative and productive, and more likely to make positive changes in their behavior when those in positions of authority do things with them, rather than to them or for them.” This hypothesis maintains that the punitive and authoritarian to mode and the permissive and paternalistic for mode are not as effective as the restorative, participatory, engaging with mode " (Wachtel, 2005).

SPARTAN TIME
Although staff and students are building community all day through identity building and classroom practices, Spartan Time is one point in the day where we intentionally focus on curriculum and community building. It is a time where teaching and modeling appropriate behaviors through the use of common restorative language takes place. In addition, Spartan Time affords students time outside of class to work on their individualized academic skills path.

RESTORATIVE QUESTIONS

DISCIPLINE FLOWCHART
A FLOWCHART USED BY STAFF TO SUPPORT STUDENTS WHEN EXPECTATIONS ARE NOT MET
Discipline is so much more: it’s Prevention of problems – setting up an environment where a student can be successful.
-
It’s Teaching students about the expectations (not assuming they were born knowing.)
-
It’s Setting Limits – letting your students know when there is a problem and giving them the opportunity to correct it.
-
Then, coming up with consequences with the student.
-
After consequences, we Move On – making clear to the student that their behavior was not OK with us, but they are!
MAJORS & MINORS

SUPPORT/ CONSEQUENCE Continuum
A TOOLKIT OF BEHAVIOR TEACHING STRATEGIES TO MEET DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS, INTENSITY, AND RATES OF INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR. NO SINGLE STRATEGY WILL WORK FOR ALL YOUTH OR IN ALL SITUATIONS.
